Best Remaining NFL Free Agents For Fantasy Football: Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill And More
Sam Wallace analyzes five players still on the free agent market and whether they could still contribute to NFL teams.
It's late May, and while the major shopping has been done through free agency and the NFL Draft—save for the occasional post-June 1 trade—there are still some players available via free agency. And there are some with a fantasy resumes that are filled with big seasons. Yet the years are ticking by and injuries adding up, making it reasonable why these former stars are still on the market.
Top Remaining NFL Free Agents for Fantasy Football 2026
Stefon Diggs | WR
Seemingly absolved of his recent off-the-field incident, Stefon Diggs remains one of the of the top remaining NFL free agents. In his first season with the Patriots, he posted 85-1,013-4 on 102 targets. He has now gone over 1,000-yards receiving in seven of his last eight seasons, with his lone "down" year coming in 2024 when he only played in eight games due to a knee injury.
From recent reports, it appears as though both the Chiefs and Commanders could be potential landing spots for Diggs, and both make a ton of sense. The Chiefs are trying to reload and build a viable receiving room for Patrick Mahomes, while the Commanders are desperate to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 campaign.
Diggs would be a solid addition to either of those offenses. He's 32 years old, but his style of play and target-earning ability will make him more than fantasy viable this season and next. A two-year contract seems not only plausible but likely at this point.
Deebo Samuel | WR
A recent Rotoballer report suggested that Deebo Samuel may be nothing more than a gadget player/returner at this stage of his career. That's kinda wild to think for the 30-year wideout who had such an incredible run of success for the 49ers just a few seasons ago. However, a closer look at the numbers, and the fact that he's still a free agent could signify that it's realistic.
In seven years, Samuel has just one season with more than 900 receiving yards. To be fair, his game was always predicated on unique opportunities and yards after the catch, and that was all certainly maximized by Kyle Shanahan over the years. Even so, in his one year with the Commanders, he topped 700 receiving yards for the fourth time in his career and scored the third-most receiving TDs in a season (5).
It forces us to wonder if his style of play is sustainable at this stage of his career and if it's transferable to another offensive environment outside of San Francisco.
His fantasy value has certainly hit rock bottom and there's no guarantee that it'll rebound even if he signs a deal with a new team. At this point, every team has had plenty of opportunities to ink him to a new contract and it just hasn't happened. Since his play style might not mesh well with every organization, teams may not be as eager to integrate him into their scheme with June right around the corner.
Samuel likely still offers some value, but it'll almost certainly be more from a true football perspective rather than for fantasy football managers.
Tyreek Hill | WR
Veteran wideout Tyreek Hill is currently recovering from a brutal injury that saw him dislocate his knee and tear multiple ligaments, including his ACL. It remains to be seen how much the 32-year old has left in the tank, especially since much of his game was predicated on game-break, field-flipping speed.
Even so, there's a legitimate chance that Hill reunites with Andy Reid and Mahomes in Kansas City this season.
The same argument we used for Samuel applies to Hill. The Chiefs could use a veteran presence in their receiver room and there aren't many better options than someone who has intimate knowledge of how the offense works than Hill.
Fantasy managers will want to keep an eye on Hill's recovery in the weeks and months ahead. Even so, there's a good chance he becomes a late-round flier in redraft leagues and an intriguing trade target in dynasty formats for managers looking to make a push for a championship.
Nick Chubb | RB
There was some initial hope that Nick Chubb could revitalize his career after he signed with the Houston Texans last season. However, despite appearing in 15 games (his most since 2022), he managed only:
- 122 rushing attempts
- 506 rushing yards
- 3 TDs
Chubb is on the wrong side of 30 years old and has never been the same since he tore both his ACL and MCL back in 2023 with Cleveland.
Honestly, there's not a lot to be excited about as there's clearly a reason he's still a free agent. There's a chance he signs with a team that already has an established, younger option as Chubb now only offers low-end backup appeal.
Fantasy managers would do well to keep Chubb on waivers and let someone else spend their FAAB to acquire him.
Russell Wilson | QB
I have to admit, I kinda forgot about Russell Wilson for a bit. Technically, he's still floating around out in free agency while potentially weighing a television broadcasting deal. I'm just trying to imagine his upbeat, quirky personality on live TV while he analyzes each play while simultaneously dropping one-line gems to a national audience.
From a football perspective, the league remains desperate for quality QBs, especially at the backup position. Assuming Wilson doesn't ink a TV deal, I would be surprised if he goes an entire offseason and season without getting a handful of calls. Either an injury to a starter or a team desperate for veteran competition/mentorship will force some organizations to pick up the phone.
For dynasty managers, Wilson is worth nothing more than a deep-bench flier in superflex formats. On the off-chance he winds up starting for a team for a brief period of time this season, he'll offer value as a QB2 streaming option.
