After using the offseason to address their ground game and offensive line, the Houston Texans have been able to round back into competitive form, leaping into the top-12 in offensive EPA and success rate. C.J. Stroud was efficient in the thriller against the Bills, throwing for 274 yards and two touchdowns while completing 68% of his passes.

The Cincinnati Bengals, meanwhile, struggled with their consistency, scoring just 9 points in the second half of their matchup against Tampa Bay, allowing the Bucs to nearly complete a comeback. Ja’Marr Chase was nowhere to be found in the win, hauling in just two receptions for a total of 12 yards.

With the Bengals more than capable of giving Houston’s defense fits with their explosive vertical offense, the Texans will be locked into another high-scoring affair.

After severely underwhelming in the playoffs, the public seemed to have forgotten how efficient Stroud was in his 2025 campaign, hovering in the top half of the board in EPA per play and in pressure-to-sack ratio. By successfully warding off pressure, Stroud was able to keep the Texans' drives alive and march their offense into scoring position.

Once inside the 20, the Texans offense fell off the tracks, plummeting down the board in EPA. The lack of production from their RBs allowed opponents to take advantage of the shortened field, smothering Stroud’s passing lanes. With David Montgomery in the fold, the Texans can now use his power inside the middle and punish stretched-out secondaries.

On the other side of the field, Joe Burrow was able to methodically move the ball down the field, entering Week 2 ranked sixth in QB success rate and 10th in CPOE. Even with their WR1 struggling to create separation, the Bengals' plethora of weapons were on full display, with Tee Higgins and Mike Gesicki combining for over 100 yards while Chase Brown added another 56 on the ground.

While I do expect the Texans to round back into dominant form on defense at some point this season, a matchup against the Bengals' versatile efforts will do them no favors, locking them into another fast-paced track meet. Even with Nico Collins questionable with a hamstring injury, Montgomery should be able to punch in a touchdown. Bottling up opposing RBs was an issue for the Bengals' front seven in their season opener against the Bucs, ranking 22nd in defensive rush success rate.
