Detriot Lions vs. New York Jets Matchup Breakdown For Fantasy Football Week 3

John Laghezza breaks down the Week 3 matchup between the Lions and Jets for fantasy football.

Jet fans like yours truly enter Week 3 slightly disappointed, in spite of winning once as an outright underdog and losing another by a field goal to a projected playoff team. We never learn. Perhaps entering Ford Field as a single-digit underdog says a lot about the public’s attitude towards New York, unless it’s an equally scathing condemnation of a leaky Lions’ D.

As a lifetime Gang Green guy, you learn to bake in a decent amount of room for letdowns anytime you’re looking downrange. With that, my fair assessment of this team remains positive, even if Sunday’s fourth-quarter collapse reminds us all too much of the “same ole Jets” disasters we remember as kids. We all knew decent quarterback play was the longstanding missing piece to the puzzle, but finding one’s much easier said than done.

As hoped, veteran Geno Smith brought an air of professionalism to a team ranking dead last in net passing yards/game (154.2) and passing yards/attempt (6.0) over a three-year span. Three years! Hard to be worse than Cleveland or Tennessee in that timeframe, but NYJ managed it. I was saying all offseason, even league-average play under center would be a monumental boost for the Jets’ entire skill position group — and that seems to be the case.

Geno’s not going to top any fantasy leaderboards, but he’s been accurate (70.8% completion, 4.6% off-target), and unlike last season, protecting the ball (0 INT). Unfortunately for fantasy gamers, the emergence of Isaiah Williams as a slot weapon is hurting Adonai Mitchell’s chances for the true breakout I dreamed of. However, averaging 7.5 targets for over 60 receiving yards per contest should find him a regular spot as a rotational flexworthy piece in standard 12-teamers. Still a solid sleeper call, if I do say so myself.

Worth noting, first-round rookie TE Kenyon Sadiq ran just one fewer route than Mason Taylor, who also hurt his thumb late against the Packers. Keep in mind, we may have been witnessing a flippening before any injury concerns — Sadiq’s earned double the targets of any other Jets TE on a 46% route participation rate. He should be added aggressively in all formats, especially when considering a shot at designed runs near the goal line. That’s the good stuff right there.

Lucky for the Jets in fantasy world, they face an objectively bad Lions defense, still missing both starting safeties and allowing 78.0 plays/game. Woohoo. New York’s defense deserves praise, but Detroit’s their first true test, and this total’s sitting at 47.5 for a reason. Perfect example of when to use sportsbooks for fantasy decision-making, as this will likely be the only time NYJ carries a +20 implied team total — don’t miss out.

  • Start: Breece Hall (RB12), Garrett Wilson (WR11), Adonai Mitchell (WR34)
  • Sit: Geno Smith (QB25)
  • Sleeper: Kenyon Sadiq (TE21)

DET_lions-logo.svgDetroit Lions Fantasy Preview

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present our Carnival Team Of The Year, the 2026 Detroit Lions. Dan Campbell’s squad is everything fantasy dreams are made of — scoring +30 points on offense while allowing +30 points on defense. How sweet it is …

The best part of this whole Lions’ offensive scenario is we’re just now truly taking flight. Jahmyr Gibbs can’t help but score +25 fantasy points every time he steps on the field, and last week reality started settling in. Detroit can’t stop anyone and will need to smash the gas pedal to rack up wins. Let’s go!

Very little to break down for DET with such high levels of consolidation going on. Hard to believe, but a remarkable 55 of Jared Goff’s 62 intended targets (88.7%) this season centered around just three players: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta. Talk about an easy job ...

The main takeaway should be targeting whichever leaguemate drafted Jameson Williams for a buy-low opportunity. Despite a deflating (6-78-0) line on the season, it’s coming. Williams continues to post elite route participation (95.3%) while earning 6.5 targets for over 82 air yards per game. The core culprit’s been an inability to convert on play-action shots, which again, is coming — Goff’s 0 for 4 when targeting Williams, and 11 of 17 for 94 yards to everyone else. Patience is a virtue …

New York’s defended more than admirably through two weeks, leading the league in yards allowed/game (195.0), time of possession/drive (2:17), and 3 & outs forced (12). Nevertheless, even as a dyed-in-the-wool Jets fan, it’s not time to anoint them the new ‘85 Bears. Yes, that also means no Super Bowl Shuffle music video … yet at least.

Kidding aside, the Lions will also be NYJ’s first true test as far as quality running games go. Not to say I don’t think Demario Davis, David Bailey and Jamien Sherwood aren’t up to the task — but who is? Every Detroit game gets treated as a total shootout until proven otherwise.

  • Start: Jared Goff (QB7), Jahmyr Gibbs (1), Amon-Ra St.Brown (WR2), Jameson Williams (WR25), Sam LaPorta (TE6)
  • Sit: Isaac TeSlaa (WR77)

Next Week’s Bold Headline, Today

  • Detroit keeps the fantasy register ringing with another win in a third consecutive +31-point outing, but it also begs the question. Can a team honestly be considered a playoff contender giving up four TDs every weekend?
