George Kittle Injury Update and Fantasy Football Outlook for 2026: A Late-Round Gem?

Sam Wallace breaks down how to approach George Kittle, coming off of a torn Achilles, for the 2026 fantasy football season.

There is no mistaking it … George Kittle embodies everything you want in a dominant TE in the NFL.

He's a monster over the middle of the field and a YAC champion. He blocks with a rabid intensity and routinely piledrives opposing players into the turf while laughing manically. He's got the perfect balance of swag, confidence, charm, and charisma.

Kittle truly is the people's tight end.

The big question now is this: Will he be able to return to his once-dominant self at the age of 32, coming off a torn Achilles? That remains to be seen.

Kittle suffered his injury in the Wild Card round and, while his recovery seems to be going well this offseason, it remains to be seen if he'll be a full-go for Week 1. If I had to make that bet right now, I would assume he will not be fully ready for the season opener. In fact, our fantasy football projections are in line with that. Here's how they currently look:

  • 13 games played
  • 70 targets
  • 56 receptions
  • 675 receiving yards
  • 4.6 TDs
  • 151 PPR (11.6 PPG)

Ultimately, our projections have Kittle finishing as the TE13. He's currently the TE9 on Underdog, which seems fair. While he may not be fully healthy for the start of the season, we have plenty of evidence to remind us how much of a game-changer he is at a naturally scarce position.

Specific to the 49ers' projections, Kittle is right in line to compete with Ricky Pearsall as the No. 3 pass-catching option behind both Mike Evans and Christian McCaffrey. We've seen this offense support multiple fantasy stars in the past, and this season appears to be no different. In fact, I'm not sure we've ever been more bullish on Brock Purdy. He's slotted in as our QB7 in our early-offseason projections.

Even if Kittle takes a bit to become a full-time player each week, there should be more than enough points scored on this team to support Kittle for however long he's available.

For some additional context, about a month ago, Pete Overzet tabbed Kittle as An Elite Stash For The Playoff Run. Here's what he had to say:

He's the cheapest he's ever been in drafts, and he's had six seasons where he's finished as the TE4 or better … draft Kittle alongside another cheap, reliable TE. Think guys like Dalton Schultz or Hunter Henry … don't get caught thinking of Kittle as a "dead roster spot." It's quite the opposite; he's the skeleton key to unlocking a superteam in the fantasy playoffs.

Even if you aren't playing in best ball leagues, the same logic applies to your traditional single-season leagues as well. Feel free to spend a decent pick on Kittle and then stack him with someone cheaper who can carry you for a few weeks. Besides, if you don't have one of the top-elite options anyway, it's pretty much just one giant tier of TD-dependent options.

In fact, you may as well draft Kittle at his current fantasy football ADP and then snag Jake Tonges with your last pick. He could be a serviceable streamer while his teammate works back to full strength.

Admittedly, there's some risk here. Kittle's age and current injury don't exactly exude confidence. Even so, Pete laid out the ideal scenario for integrating Kittle into your championship plans for this upcoming season, and I'm fully in agreement with his assessment.

If you don't end up drafting Trey McBride or Brock Bowers (or Colston Loveland, I suppose), you might as well wait to draft Kittle at the end of the TE1 range. Everyone else ranked beyond TE3 is going to get you essentially the same player for too high a price.

He may not have overall TE1 upside in his arsenal anymore, but Kittle has more than enough left in the tank to carry your fantasy team to a championship, especially during the weeks when it matters the most.
