Learning From Other Leagues' Fantasy Football Drafts

I'll never tell you the exact number of fantasy drafts on my calendar this week. But this Saturday was the big one: my oldest home league.

As much as I love the tradition of hosting and the decades of friendship, I love my leaguemates' questionable draft choices even more. WHAT IDIOTS! And there are plenty of lessons to be learned from them.

While your leaguemates might not make the exact same picks as mine did this weekend, I can guarantee they'll fall into the same patterns.

So as we enter the final stretch of draft season, here are some key lessons from my draft to help dominate yours.

Your League Is Afraid of Murky Backfields

I watched TreVeyon Henderson get drafted almost two full rounds ahead of Rhamondre Stevenson on Saturday and it's still not sitting right with me.

If you look at our rankings, Mike Vrabel's backfield is much much tighter than that.

In fact, no one seems to agree which RB should be drafted ahead of the other.

And depending on which app you're drafting on, their ADP is much closer, too.

The Takeaway: Your league is afraid of murky backfields. That uncertainty could push a player well beyond ADP if no one is confident enough to take the shot. Keep an eye out for guys like Stevenson, Woody Marks, Kenneth Gainwell, Jonah Coleman and MarShawn Lloyd.

Your League Won't Go Chalk

Saquon Barkley and Amon-Ra St. Brown were two players who went off the board earlier than expected in my draft. St. Brown before Christian McCaffrey and James Cook; Barkley before CeeDee Lamb.

It's important to remember that your leaguemates will always value players through their own lens. (You can do that, too, you know.) Because of this, there's no exact way for any draft board to play out.

And that's OK.

Even our experts aren't in perfect lockstep on which order Round 1 players should be leaving the board.

The Takeaway: Nothing is a 'chalk' pick. Be prepared to capitalize on the value that falls to you unexpectedly. With so many question marks surrounding early-round players, keep an eye on potential 'fallers' like McCaffrey, Justin Jefferson, Ashton Jeanty and Malik Nabers.

Your League Might Use Trash Rankings

Don't underestimate your leaguemates' level of desperation on draft day.

When one of our buddies showed up to the draft completely unprepared, asking to use a printer that we haven't owned since 2019, he quickly faced the realization that he had no access to a coveted cheat sheet.

But he wasn't going to give up that easily. Not with a league championship on the line. He ended up digging out an extra (read: dirty) Fantasy Life cheat sheet from our trash and … his problem was solved.

I wish I was making this up.

The Takeaway (I've got three): Not everyone will be as prepared as you are on draft day. People love Fantasy Life’s rankings … in all forms. And I really need to buy a shredder.
