Minnesota Vikings Fantasy Preview

Despite 17 quarterbacks already throwing for more yards in one game than Carson Wentz managed in two combined, the Vikings enter Week 3 undefeated with Kyler Murray back under center. Wentz kept the offense on schedule. Murray should only raise the ceiling.

Hard to glean much from seven dropbacks before Kyler got concussed, but he did connect with Justin Jefferson twice. Face it, any confidence lies as much with Kevin O'Connell as Murray himself. And given this backfield, Kyler's legs will carry a decent chunk of the run game.

After Jordan Mason went down, certain analysts (slowly raises hand) insisted Aaron Jones couldn't handle a bellcow role at his age, dreaming instead of a Demond Claiborne promotion. Well, there's being wrong, and then there's being wildly, spectacularly incorrect. Old man Jones toted the rock 23 times for the first time since November of 2022 — Claiborne played just two carry-less snaps. (Sad trombone sound here)

Maybe my first instinct wasn't so far off, though. Jones just missed practice with a new knee injury. Even if he plays, will Minnesota load him up the same way? If not, will they really favor DeeJay Dallas over Claiborne? Hate my answer, but yeah, probably … Stash Claiborne where convenient, stream Dallas where desperate — just keep those hopes suppressed.

As for pass catchers, it's subtraction by addition. Jauan Jennings' return throws more cold water on a Jordan Addison breakout. He's one of just five players with 50+ routes and two or fewer catches. Sheesh. We can't keep taking zeroes waiting on a Murray connection, but hold where possible. It ain't over 'til it's over, especially versus a beatable Tampa secondary that's bottom-3 in pressure rate.

So tell me … how long does this visceral reaction to the word Buccaneers last after losing all my Survivor teams to the woeful Browns? Rough scene, dropping games to the husk of Deshaun Watson.

Weirdest part? Bucky Irving's been great, with nearly 5.5 yards/attempt and 5.5 receptions/game. But as always, an offense goes as the QB goes.

Hate to talk bad about my boy Baker Mayfield after rebuilding such a damaged career arc, but a single pick doesn't tell the story. His three fumbles lost lead the league, and only Malik Willis has taken more sacks. Aggressive, not wild. It's a fine line.

I won't handwave Cleveland's Mason Graham or Carson Schwesinger, but Tampa ran for 5.5 yards/rush with a lead — you can't lose those games. Nature corrects for the Bucs eventually… just not this weekend.

Minnesota dials the heat so high, opposing OCs show up with off-kilter game plans. It's not just the 12.5 PPG allowed. The Vikings lead the league in defensive EPA/rush (+0.41), allow the lowest completion rate (53.2%), and create the most pressures and sacks. Offenses open a door and without fail, there's a Purple People Eater behind it.

Nevertheless, Tampa's so consolidated around its top four pass catchers, they're hard to sit, rookie Ted Hurst included. Egbuka, Godwin, Hurst, and Otton own 63% of Mayfield's targets, and not one has more than 11 targets and 68 yards or fewer than 7 targets and 56 yards. Talk about tight like a tiger.

Can a game end in a tie? Technically yes, but has an analyst ever correctly predicted one? Part of me says Tampa's home in a must-win, get-right spot. The other insists Baker's going to see ghosts when he gets a load of what Brian Flores has in store.
