Kansas City Chiefs fans' level of excitement is at an all-time high as they welcome back their two-time MVP, with Patrick Mahomes expected to take the field for the first time since tearing his ACL. In a divisional matchup against Denver, Mahomes can ill afford to get off to a slow start, battling it out against a defense that excels in coverage.

It was a 2025 campaign to forget for Mahomes, leading the Chiefs to a 6-8 record before going down with a season-ending injury. His play on the field also left something to be desired, stumbling down to the bottom of the board in CPOE, Bad Throw Percentage, and Air Yards/Reception.

Heading into this season, Mahomes will need to round back into form if he wants to keep the Chiefs in contention for the playoffs, masking a defense that is expected to harshly regress after losing key pieces in their secondary. When playing in a high-flying track meet, variance is at an all-time high, lowering their chances of winning.

The Broncos, on the other hand, aggressively re-tooled their offense; they sent multiple picks to Miami for Jaylen Waddle, giving Bo Nix a WR1 to lean on. Should their offense be able to complement their high level of play on defense, the Broncos will be a dangerous, well-rounded contender capable of making a run to the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately for Mahomes, he draws the short end of the stick in his return to the field, battling it out against a Broncos defense that generates pressure at a high rate while leading the league in Dropback Success Rate. Chiefs OT Josh Simmons has also been ruled out, leaving their offensive line vulnerable to getting beat on the outside.

While it remains to be seen how mobile Mahomes will be in his first game back, it’s tough to envision him being able to extend plays with his legs while the Broncos LBs are anchored across the middle. This will force him to throw into tight passing lanes, lowering his probability of generating a completion.

To make matters worse for the Chiefs, Kenneth Walker will also struggle to give them the versatility they need to create space on the outside, combatting a front seven that ranks in the top 10 in Def Rush EPA and Success Rate. With the Broncos clogging his running lanes, this will make it difficult for Walker to create yards after contact, leading to minimal gains.

On the other side of the ball, the departures of Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson will free up the field to the benefit of Bo Nix, allowing the Broncos' QB to methodically move the ball while controlling the time of possession. With Denver’s elite offensive line neutralizing Chris Jones in the trenches, Nix will have more time in the pocket to operate.

With the Chiefs' pass catchers having less time in the open field to exploit Denver’s gaps in coverage, the Broncos will be able to keep a defender on their hips for the full duration of their routes, leading to a higher volume of disruptions. The Broncos' pressure up front will also increase the amount of Havoc in Mahomes' throws, leading to an uptick in his total number of Turnover-Worthy Plays.

Mahomes' mobility is also in question while wearing a knee brace, potentially forcing him to sit in a collapsing pocket and make an ill-advised throw rather than scramble away from the Broncos' pressure.
