College Football Best Bets for Week 10: Lean on the Alabama Defense
Kody Malstrom breaks down his three best college football bets for Week 10, including angles on BYU vs. Utah and Alabama vs. LSU.
Arguably the most impactful week in regard to making the playoffs, Week 10 pits plenty of contenders on the verge of elimination, heightening the excitement for Saturday’s jam-packed slate.
With the margin for error razor-thin, expect plenty of drama to unfold while dreams of competing for the national championship are dashed as the night progresses.
Here are my favorite Week 10 college football bets.
College Football Best Bets for Week 10
BYU vs. Utah (Team Total u27.5) (-115, BetMGM)
Even after going through a turbulent offseason, Utah has managed to brush aside regression while taking sole possession of first in the Big 12 standings. The Utes' high level of play on offense has played a major role in their success this year, fielding a group that ranks near the top of the board in success rate and finishing drives.
In a massive conference tilt against BYU, Devon Dampier will struggle to recapture the same success he had earlier in the year while battling it out against a secondary that ranks in the top-20 in dropback EPA allowed per play. With the Cougars' back end smothering Dampier’s passing lanes, the defense will be able to shade linebackers to the flats, forcing the Utes QB to scramble up a clogged middle for minimal gains.
When Utah is held to a hard stop, the defense will be unable to get the ball back in Dampier’s hands in quick order while Bear Bachmeier takes advantage of a second level that ranks 122nd in explosiveness. By controlling the time of possession, BYU will chip away at Utah’s total number of scoring opportunities, keeping the Utes under the team total.

Alabama vs. LSU (Team Total u30.5) (-112, DraftKings)
Do not let LSU’s recent performances against Mississippi State and Auburn fool you. The offense is flawed, ranking outside the top-90 in explosiveness, which makes the Tigers overly reliant on methodical drives. When Sam Leavitt is unable to scramble away from pressure, the LSU QB has been prone to making ill-advised throws, averaging one interception per game.
With Alabama on deck, Leavitt’s struggles in the pocket are poised to persist while he faces off against a defensive line that resides in the top half of the board in rush success rate. With LSU’s stable of running backs failing to pull defensive attention to the middle, Leavitt will be forced to weave the ball through narrow windows, leading to an uptick in his total number of turnover-worthy plays.
Georgia (-3.5) vs. Ole Miss (-110, Fanatics)
At 6-2, Ole Miss is flirting with danger, potentially one loss away from being knocked out of the playoffs. While the offense has thrived, the Rebels' lack of production on defense has held the team back from being a well-rounded unit, limping into Saturday ranked 89th in success rate and 85th in finishing drives.
In a daunting matchup against Georgia, the Rebels will have their hands full trying to get the Bulldogs off the field while going up against an offense that is averaging a success rate of 51.9%. With Ole Miss severely outmatched in the trenches, the defensive line will struggle to generate pressure, allowing Gunner Stockton to operate in a clean pocket, which will improve the quality of his throws.
On the other side of the ball, Trinidad Chambliss will be bottled up in the backfield while Georgia’s defensive line quickly collapses the pocket, making it difficult for the Heisman contender to get out to the open field. Place a wager on Georgia to cover the spread at -3.5, with intentions of adding more to your position should the number tick back down to -3.
