After suffering an embarrassing loss to San Francisco in Week 1, the Los Angeles Rams make their way back to the States to face off against the New York Giants. With the Seattle Seahawks and 49ers jumping out to early leads in the NFC West, the Rams must take care of business or risk falling into an early hole.

New York Giants vs Los Angeles Rams Betting Odds For Week 2

After months of anticipation, Aaron Donald is expected to make his long-awaited return to the field, giving the Rams' defensive line a destructive force in the interior. While it remains to be seen if Donald can recapture the same success he had earlier in his career, he made it well known he would not come out of retirement unless he felt like he could still play at a high level.

Every bit of Donald’s production will be needed in order to slow down the Giants, facing off against an offensive line that ranks in the top 12 in pass protection PFF grade. By bottling up Jaxson Dart, the Giants will be held to early outs, leading to an uptick in the Rams' total number of possessions on offense.

When on offense, Matthew Stafford will be able to round back into form after a disappointing debut by taking advantage of a defense that struggles in coverage, per near dead-last marks in dropback EPA. With clear advantages on both sides of the ball, expect the Rams to show why they are listed as the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl.

Stafford’s performance against the 49ers was certainly alarming, exiting the week ranked well below league average in QB EPA per play and in bad throw percentage. Whether it was due to the Rams' questionable travel schedule or lack of motivation, it was a performance we have not been accustomed to from the reigning MVP.

With the Giants underwhelming in coverage, Stafford will be able to connect with his pass catchers at a higher rate, giving the Rams' offense the versatility it needs to sustain drives down the field. The Giants' inability to create pressure will also give Stafford a clean pocket to operate in, improving the quality of his throws.

By stretching out the second level of the defense, Kyren Williams' and Blake Corum’s running lanes in the middle will widen, increasing the duo’s chances of staying ahead of the sticks once they get past the trenches.

On the other side of the ball, negative regression looms large over the Giants' offense with the quality of defense ramping up. Not only will the Giants' offensive line struggle to slow down the Rams' pass rush, but Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson will be able to hold their own in coverage, allowing the Rams to spy LBs to help bottle up Dart in the backfield.

With a defender farther away from the catch radius, the Rams' probability of hauling in a catch down the field improves, resulting in a higher completion percentage. The lack of bodies near the point of reception will also increase the Rams' chances of creating an explosive play through the air, shading value toward the over on Stafford’s longest completion prop.
