Arizona Cardinals vs. Detroit Lions Matchup Breakdown For Fantasy Football Week 5
John Laghezza breaks down the Week 5 matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions in what is shaping up to potentially be the fantasy football game of the week on Sunday.
Ahhh, Detroit, the Motor City, home of the Lions … where all your fantasy dreams come true. Luckily for us, fantasy goodness travels, and anywhere they go, we go. Only nine teams average +50-point totals this season, and two of them face off here.

Detroit Lions Fantasy Preview
For all the headaches and pen-cap chewing that fantasy incessantly thrusts upon us, Detroit’s the polar opposite. Our cool breeze, our oasis. When it comes to the Lions, smoke ‘em if you got ‘em — no team’s even close to their 61.5 average game total. Man, 61.5 points across an entire month is crazy.
It starts with Jared Goff, fantasy’s QB4, who’s second in passing yards, and yet to throw a pick. Impressive stuff considering he’s already at 174 dropbacks (43.5/game). One of only three quarterbacks to average over 300 passing yards/game, Goff’s a walking bonus with the added perk of playing right alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, only the best player on Earth. Oh, I almost forgot Arizona is 31st or worse in defensive EPA/dropback (-0.39), opposing passer rating (114.9), and passing TDs (11). Million fantasy points incoming…
How great is Gibbs in fantasy? It’s almost unfair; the consensus 1.01 is pacing to outscore the RB14 and RB15 combined. At a position that disproportionately weighs receiving, Gibbs leads all RBs in targets (28), catches (22), receiving yards (187), and is tied in touchdowns (2).
Is Dan Campbell making life easy for us in the backfield? Not at all. Detroit not only supplies big-time volume, but it’s densely consolidated around the big-4 — Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Jameson Williams and Jahmyr Gibbs for a ridiculous 82.3% of all team targets. There isn’t a single spot I wouldn’t start any of these guys, especially against these Cardinals, ranking 28th or worse in fantasy points allowed/game to WRs (29.1) and TEs (12.6).
- Start: QB Jared Goff, RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, TE Sam LaPorta
- Sit: N/A
- Sleeper: WR Isaac TeSlaa
Arizona Cardinals Fantasy Preview
Arizona averages right around 295 yards/game on the season, unless you pull that debacle against Seattle out of the sample, then it spikes closer to 350 — and you could do the same thing with a dozen other Cardinal stats. Point being, there’s a functional offense in there somewhere when the matchup’s right, and the Lions have only held an opponent under 445 yards once in 2026. What?!?! That’s right, they’re dead last with a bullet in plays/game (72.0), yards/game (423.8), and defensive EPA/play (-0.21).
Jacoby Brissett’s obviously flawed under center (news flash), but at 40.5 dropbacks/game and a 68% completion rate, there’s going to be potential for PPR goodness. Especially when trailing, Arizona’s shown a distinct willingness to sling the rock. Looking for ceiling potential? Search no farther than Week 3, when Brissett hung a (280-2-0; 4-4-1) line on a tough Niners’ D, good for a QB5 finish.
Similar to Detroit, Arizona knows exactly where their bread gets buttered and, if anything, might be more consolidated than the Lions. Star TE Trey McBride and newly minted star WR Michael Wilson currently account for just under 61% of all team targets. That’s between just two players, wow! For some perspective, no other team has two players averaging +10 targets/game — while McBride and Wilson both sit over 11.
Aside from Kendrick Bourne’s surprise (8-75-0) breakout Week 1, neither he nor Marvin Harrison Jr. managed to crack a top-50 WR finish since. That said, if it was ever going to happen for Maserati Marv, it’d have to be here. He’s earning a +20-yard target once a game, and these Lions have 17% more deep completions than the 31st defense. Again it’s now or never for Harrison Jr. — lay an egg, and he’s dead to us in fantasy.
Arizona’s RB room is harder to parse than it should be, especially after Jeremiyah Love lagged 26 touches in Week 3. Assuming his ankle kept him off the field for all but two fourth-quarter snaps may be off target. I tried decoding the rookie RB’s post-game quote novela to no avail: “I'm really frustrated with myself because I just want to be good. I want to be 100 percent, and I want to go out there and do what I need to do. Not saying I'm not 100 percent, but I'm not where I want to be. I'm not able to go out there and do spectacular plays every single time or stuff like that. So, just frustrated with myself, not with the coaches, but they're doing a great job of managing me. It's not really just my ankle; it's more of just the whole thing. It's been a long year for me. Body sometimes is down, body sometimes is tired. So it's just managing those things. Coaches know that this is probably going to be the longest year of my life.” Yeah, I have no idea what he’s talking about, but it doesn’t sound good.
Long story, very long ... I’m adding Tyler Allgeier wherever possible just in case this snowballs into something major.
- Start: RB Jeremiyah Love, RB Tyler Allgeier, WR Michael Wilson, TE Trey McBride
- Sit: WR Kendrick Bourne
- Sleeper: QB Jacoby Brissett, WR Marvin Harrison Jr.
Next Week's Bold Headline, Today
In spite of delivering on fireworks as expected, multiple missing pieces on the Arizona O-line hurt their ability to pass deep, and they fail to keep up with Detroit’s fourth game this season going over +31 points scored.
