Mike Evans Injury Update & More Fantasy Football News From Training Camps
Adam Pfeifer rounds up today's NFL training camp news and notes as they pertain to fantasy football, including Mike Evans' ongoing battle with injuries and Malik Nabers' status for Week 1.
We’ve reached September.
Real NFL football will be played this month, and fantasy football drafts are reaching the home stretch. Of course, news isn't slowing down just because the season is about to kick off.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
San Francisco Hopeful Mike Evans Will Practice Next Week
Evans continues to miss a considerable amount of practice time with multiple injuries, most recently an adductor issue. San Francisco general manager John Lynch is hopeful that Evans will return to practice next week, which sounds both optimistic and worrisome at the same time.
The 49ers play in Australia next Thursday, giving Evans even less time to get on the practice field. This does make his Week 1 status a legitimate question mark. San Francisco could suddenly find themselves very thin at wide receiver to open the season. Ricky Pearsall is already out for the year, while veteran Christian Kirk will begin the season on injured reserve, meaning a potential Evans absence would leave the 49ers with De’Zhaun Stribling, Deebo Samuel and Demarcus Robinson to lead the receiver room.
Jeremiyah Love “50/50” To Play Week 1
Love continues to recover from a high ankle sprain and according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the rookie running back is “50/50” to suit up for Week 1’s contest against the Chargers.
During his preseason debut a few weeks back, Love shined, rushing for 58 yards on 11 carries. The usage was favorable, too, playing alongside Tyler Allgeier during the first two drives of the game, handling 71% of the snaps and 64% of the Cardinals’ rush attempts. He then dominated the snaps on his third and final drive with Gardner Minshew in the game. With James Conner starting the year on injured reserve and Trey Benson no longer part of the equation, Allgeier would be in store for a massive workload if Love isn’t active Week 1. But even if Love is able to play, there’s a good chance Allgeier still sees enough work to warrant FLEX consideration.

Malik Nabers Not A Guarantee For Week 1?
Although the clips of him throughout Giants training camp were promising, Nabers is still noncommittal regarding his Week 1 availability. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that Nabers feels good but still has some hurdles to clear ahead of Week 1. It’s entirely possible this could be some early gamesmanship by the Giants ahead of a matchup with division rival Dallas, especially since all previous signs pointed towards Nabers playing Week 1.
Only time will tell, but this news really doesn’t change my stance on Nabers in fantasy. He remains a high-upside third-round selection with top-six wide receiver upside as long as he’s on the field. Remember, as a rookie, Nabers posted an insane 35% target share, seeing as much volume as anyone in football:
- 35% target share (1st)
- 31% TPRR (2nd)
- 11.3 targets per game (1st)
- 9.1 first-read targets per game (1st)
Bengals WRs To Be Limited In Practice
Both Ja’Marr Chase (knee) and Tee Higgins (heel) are expected to be limited in practice this week. Chase hyperextended his knee during practice last week, but stated he’d be able to play if the Bengals had a game. Cincinnati doesn’t seem overly concerned that either injury will keep their star receiver duo on the sidelines for their Week 1 contest against Tampa Bay.
We’ll continue to track the status of both wideouts leading up to Week 1.
