Cincinnati Bengals Fantasy Preview

Few games on Sunday’s slate will boast more elite fantasy assets than Bengals versus Bucs. You don’t need me to tell you … smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, people.

The fantasy public’s back on the Bengals again, drafting two striped cats in the first round with good reason. Hard to say a single bad thing about Ja’Marr Chase’s game provided he’s healthy — in many other seasons, he could’ve easily been the overall 1.01. 

Chase’s elite battery with Joe Burrow reminds me of the Matthew Stafford-to-Calvin Johnson connection once upon a time that meant an automatic playoff berth for fantasy GMs. Even with a +400 fantasy points on the ledger already, I’m not sold that we’ve seen Chase’s best season.

One step down the depth chart, Tee Higgins remains an obvious must-start. Just wanted to throw out the fact that he’s being drafted at his lowest price in years, despite the best forward-looking situation. Remember, we haven’t seen Joe Burrow coming off a full, healthy offseason in a while. Those repetitions matter.

Tampa’s secondary will be on full display Sunday after underperforming against the pass all year in 2025. The Bucs bring back big Vita Vea to play alongside new linemates A'Shawn Robinson and 15th overall pick Rueben Bain. While it’s possible that puts TB over the top, not sure it addresses the issue of Tampa’s legendary pass-funnel defense — Cincinnati will have no problem attacking relentlessly to find out. I’m currently projecting both Bengals' WRs for top-12 positional finishes.

Tampa Bay blitzed at the fourth-highest rate in 2025 (20.0%), but produced just 37 sacks on the league’s fifth-lowest sack-to-pressure conversion rate (14.9%). As my down-south friends would say, that dog don’t hunt — you have to seal the deal against a known gunslinger like Joey B.

On the Bucs’ side of the ball, it’s a bit more confusing, explaining my conspicuously low personal rostership rates. And as a conviction drafter, I’m terrified of not having enough Bucs since I’m not down on the offense whatsoever — there just seemed to be competition under every unturned stone.

Between the acquisition of Kenneth Gainwell and the retention of Sean Tucker, Bucky Irving never got cheap enough for me to scoop up. My worry? A repeat of the same post-bye utilization, which may have yielded 18 touches/game, sure — but at 3.4 yards/carry plus 2.7 targets/game while playing a clear second fiddle for goal-line rushes, what is it worth?

And that’s before Rachaad White left the mix — a clear downgrade from Gainwell, who just went into Pittsburgh as a one-year mercenary, only to outplay and outscore incumbent Jaylen Warren. Not sure I possess the intestinal fortitude to start Gainwell Week 1, despite my confidence he’s going to be an impactful, flexworthy piece throughout the season.

Buccaneer receivers aren’t any easier to decipher either. Loved Emeka Egbuka with the departure of Mike Evans, but the toe injury plus a depth of similarly priced WRs in that range kept me mostly off him in drafts. No need to squint to see Egbuka’s upside — 127 targets is a metric ton for a first-year player, and the hope is Baker Mayfield’s healthy this time around (his 2025 injury report looked like a CVS receipt).

After that, it’s murkier waters trying to decide between veteran Chris Godwin, rookie Ted Hurst and second-year WR Jalen McMillan — who’s not getting nearly enough love for managing +2.1 yards per route last year, despite battling injuries amidst major target competition. 

If the matchup weren’t so tempting, I’d love to sit them all for a week to see how routes or targets shake out. However, given TB’s league-high 70% use of 3-WR sets and a 50-point expectation, you have to roll the dice. No rest for the weary.

Why am I not all gung-ho to attack the Bengals’ historically bad defense? Well, I’m worried it might not be on the verge of a major turnaround. Cincy had a very busy offseason looking to bolster a porous D and give this team a real chance at a deep playoff run. Between signing DE Boye Mafe, extending monster DT Dexter Lawrence, plus spending a second- and third-round pick on defenders DE Cashius Howell and CB Tacario Davis, the Bengals may no longer be doormats. 

With that, Joe Burrow lives to create negative game scripts for the opposition — forcing our hand to get any piece of these Cincinnati games on either side while we can.
