Luckily for the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seahawks defense will be able to put together a dominant performance by taking advantage of the injury-riddled Washington Commanders.

The injury to Jayden Daniels could not come at a worse time for the Commanders, losing the versatility the offense needs to remain competitive. Daniels' running ability was vital to the Commanders' success, using it to mask an offensive line that struggles in pass blocking.

With Daniels out, Marcus Mariota makes his return under center, handicapping the Commanders' ceiling on offense. In his brief appearance against the Dallas Cowboys, Mariota was efficient, throwing for 111 yards and one touchdown while completing 68.75% of his passes.

Unfortunately for Mariota, he draws the short end of the stick in Week 3 with the Commanders hosting the Seattle Seahawks, who excel on defense at all three levels of the field. With Mariota struggling to air out the ball, the offense will stall out, making it easier for the Seahawks to pull away and cover the spread.

The Commanders' inability to ward off pressure will also allow the Seahawks to anchor LBs in coverage while sending just the front four, smothering Mariota’s windows at every level of the defense. When slowed down in the trenches, Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White will be unable to cut the distance to gain in half, keeping the Commanders comfortably behind the sticks.

After being held into an early out, the Commanders will be unable to get the ball back in Mariota’s hands in quick order with a defense in the bottom five in defensive DVOA. This will chip away at Washington’s total number of possessions on offense, improving the probability of being held behind on the scoreboard.

If the Seahawks spread crosses through the key number of -7, bypass the spread and place them in a six-point teaser with the 49ers instead.

The Seahawks' pressure will also give the Commanders' pass catchers less time in the open field to exploit the gaps in coverage, keeping a defender near the point of contact, which will make it difficult to generate yards after the catch. Barring a broken play, expect Mariota to be held to conservative throws to the flats and across the middle, keeping him under the total of 32.5 on his longest completion prop.
