Buffalo Bills Fantasy Preview

You just know Josh Allen’s out for revenge after losing to these very same Texans in Week 12 in one of his worst efforts of 2025 (253-0-2; 5-20-0). Bet your bottom dollar the former MVP’s thinking “that was then, and this is now.”

After Keon Coleman’s fantastical (8-112-1) Week 1 breakout that wasn’t, the Bills recorded just one more WR finish inside the top-10 all season (Khalil Shakir scored 20.8 points in Week 8 … whoopty-do). Hard to believe it’s even possible from an offense averaging +28 real-life points per game with one of the premier shot-callers under center. Go figure. 

Lots of offseason consternation in fantasy circles this summer for the newest Bill, WR DJ Moore — and honestly, the disdain may be misplaced. I never liked the stylistic fit for DJM last year in a Ben Johnson scheme, predicated on timing and technicalities. Move Moore over to Buffalo, where Allen grinds each play until the defense breaks down, and suddenly there’s a freestyle session with massive potential. Remember, Allen managed to elevate the ghost of Brandin Cooks to a (4-101-0) game against the Eagles in Week 17. Why can’t Moore, a better player, serve a similar role?

Run stopping, pressure creation, turnovers, drive efficiency … name a defensive stat, and Houston ranked in the top three. Not to mention the addition of 36th overall pick DT Kayden McDonald out of OSU … crazy to think they could be even better this time around. 

With that, don’t overthink starting Allen, James Cook, or Moore, although I wouldn’t hold anything against the Bills if they fail Sunday spectacularly. They’re facing a supremely difficult Texans D, who just allowed the NFL’s fewest yards/game (277,2) on the game’s best defensive EPA/play (+0.12).  

Cook did manage 119 total scrimmage yards with a score in that last meeting, so all hope’s not lost. It just doesn’t hide the fact that it took an opposing RB until Week 12 to eclipse 66 rushing yards in 2025. That’s incredible stuff right there.

Frankly, this 44.5-point total caught me by surprise, but rather than IKB (I know better) the betting markets again, a second look actually changed my view on the Texans. Perhaps I sold them a bit short as a run-first, slow-moving, ineffective offense — which isn’t even totally true. 

Houston ran the sixth-most plays of any team (64.0 plays/game), while tying Tennessee and Tampa Bay for the highest frequency of +3-WR sets (70.0%). Who would’ve thought it?

Houston Texans Fantasy Preview

DeMeco Ryans’ Texans stayed busy this offseason bolstering the run game, starting in the trenches by adding G Ed Ingram, RT Braden Smith, and G Wyatt Teller, as well as 26th overall pick G Keylan Rutledge. Add in the versatility of free agent RB David Montgomery, who presents way more of a receiving threat than Nick Chubb (a low bar), and I’m actually starting to pick up what the Texans have been putting down. Starting to get dark-horse Super Bowl vibes, to be honest.

Flipside, attention to a Bills’ defense that failed to stop the ground attack all season comes to the fore. Buffalo wound up bottom-3 in defensive EPA/rush (-0.07), yards/attempt (5.1), yards after contact/carry (3.56), plus explosive rush rate (11.3%). Yikes. David Montgomery may not be Barry Sanders in terms of evasion, but will have a shot to reach RB1 status, provided Houston doesn’t get blown out.

Roll with Texans Nico Collins for ceiling and Dalton Schultz for floor. More aggressive players than me might start Kayshon Boutte or Jaylin Noel for a shot at big play hunting, but I’m afraid Houston may serve us up a heaping helping of Xavier Hutchinson (yawn). 

Keep an eye on this WR room’s utilization — there’s one more fantasy-viable piece hidden in there somewhere without Jayden Higgins …

• Sleeper: Dalton Schultz (TE17)

Next Week’s Bold Headlines, Today

• Hard to assess anyone’s true offensive capabilities against these Texans. They say year-over-year defense isn’t sticky, and Houston would like a word.
• Buffalo’s offense didn’t look prolific, but Dalton Kincaid tying his most routes run in 2025 (31) through one game is really encouraging for a TE1 rest-of-season finish.
• When DeMeco Ryans said David Montgomery fit their team’s identity as a workhorse, he wasn’t kidding. D-Mont blows last year’s single-game touch total out of the water, proving he probably should’ve been drafted in the late third round, not the 4/5 turn.
