Dak Prescott Primed To Beat The Odds With Good Even-Numbered Season

Published

Just what is it about Dak Prescott in odd-numbered years? Since 2019, every other year Prescott has passed for at least 4,400 yards. In the even-numbered years, let's not talk about it. Is Dak going to break that trend and have a big season at the helm of one of the best offenses in the NFL? Ian Hartitz breaks it down as part of his Dallas Cowboys Team Preview.

Is Dak Prescott basically a discount Joe Burrow in fantasy land?

Pretty much! Our fantasy football projections actually have Dak throwing for more yards (4,249 vs. 4,102) than Mr. Burrow. Their overall fantasy projections are within 5 points of each other. While it'll be tough for either to catch the top-ranked dual-threat aliens capable of rushing for 10 touchdowns, weekly overall QB1 upside persists for both pocket assassins thanks to their respective stud top-2 receivers and potentially porous defenses.

Of course, the discount isn't THAT steep these days. Burrow (QB3, pick 63.9) is only going a little more than a round sooner than Prescott (QB8, 78.4). This is pretty close to the ceiling that we've seen from Dak since he returned from his devastating broken ankle suffered back in 2020.

Prescott fantasy points per game:

  • 2021: 20 (QB8)
  • 2022: 16.6 (QB14)
  • 2023: 20.2 (QB4)
  • 2024: 14.6 (QB22)
  • 2025: 18.5 (QB9)

The days of Prescott clearing 300 rushing yards and scoring a handful of touchdowns on the ground might be over. But then again, he does possess his best one-two punch at receiver since the CeeDee Lamb/Amari Cooper combo. Better health and performance across the offensive front could help this offense (again) vie for top-scoring honors—something they achieved as recently as 2023.

Ultimately, Dak deserves to be in the same tier as guys like Brock Purdy, Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence, but I would give those younger, more fleet-footed options the slight edge when not attempting to complete a QB-WR stack. This places Prescott just ahead of guys coming off season-ending injuries like Bo Nix and Patrick Mahomes.
