Man vs. Zone Matchups for WR/TEs in Week 3:

Adam Pfeifer identifies wide receivers and tight ends set to excel against Week 3 coverage schemes, including Parker Washington and Khalil Shakir.

Coverage schemes can often dictate what offenses and pass-catchers are able to do on a weekly basis. Being able to identify who excels against man or zone coverage can give you an edge in any fantasy football format, whether season-long, dynasty, DFS, etc.

Let’s take a look at a few players who project fairly well ahead of Week 3’s action.

Week 3 Man vs. Zone Matchups for WR/TEs

Parker Washington vs. New England Patriots

There’s probably still going to be some redraft start/sit questions regarding Parker Washington this week.

There shouldn’t be.

Between his end of 2025 and start to 2026, there should be no debate: Washington is a must-start wide receiver. So far this season, Washington trails only Jaxon Smith-Njigba in target share (38%), while also accounting for 50% of Jacksonville’s air yards. The Jaguars are using Washington in every way possible, whether it’s down the field, in the intermediate levels, in motion, in 12 personnel, 13 personnel, you name it. He’s the clear engine of this passing attack and, just like last week, should benefit from the defense he’s facing.

Last week, Patrick Surtain primarily defended Brian Thomas on the outside, allowing Washington to crush the rest of Denver’s man-heavy pass defense. This week, Thomas will draw Christian Gonzalez against a New England defense that is playing man coverage 31% of the time thus far, a top-five rate in the league. So far this season, Washington ranks third in the league in fantasy points per route against man coverage (2.32). And last year, Washington was targeted on 32% of his routes against man coverage, a top-12 rate in the league.

Khalil Shakir vs. Los Angeles Chargers

This recommendation, of course, depends on the status of DJ Moore, who is day-to-day with a shoulder injury. If Moore is active, Khalil Shakir isn’t someone I want to play in most redraft formats. But if he’s sidelined, Shakir becomes a viable FLEX play and value wide receiver in DFS contests.

The Bills will still spread the ball around in the event Moore is out, but this matchup could lead to more Shakir. Los Angeles has deployed two-high coverage almost 48% of the time this season, one of the higher rates in the league. Shakir, though seeing slightly more downfield work this season, is usually used in the short to intermediate areas of the field, making this a potentially advantageous matchup.

Last season, Shakir averaged 2.62 yards per route run against two-high coverage, compared to just 1.28 YPRR against single-high. He was also targeted on 23.2% of his routes against zone coverage.

Keep an eye on Moore’s status throughout the week, and don’t forget about Shakir if he’s ruled out.

Adonai Mitchell @ Detroit Lions

For those desperate for a WR3/FLEX this weekend, Adonai Mitchell certainly has some upside, especially in this spot. Mitchell was targeted 12 times in Week 2, converting half of them for 63 yards. His 178 air yards were the third-most in football this week, now ranking 12th in the league so far this season.

The Mitchell/Geno pairing works, as Mitchell has always been a very good separator, especially on deeper routes, while Smith loves to take shots down the field. Mitchell has run go routes 24.6% of the time this season, while accounting for a whopping 54% of the Jets' air yards, the third-highest rate in the NFL.

Those explosive plays could very well be there against a banged-up Detroit secondary that deploys single-high coverage 65.7% of the time, one of the highest rates in football. The Lions are also coughing up 8.6 air yards per pass attempt through the first two weeks, the 10th-worst mark in football.
