Kayshon Boutte Fantasy Football Value After Trade To Houston Texans

Kayshon Boutte’s time in New England has felt like it was coming to a close once the Patriots added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs this offseason. He was one of the most logical trade candidates in the league. But then Patriots training camp kicked off and Boutte was thriving, potentially silencing any trade talk surrounding the 24-year-old wideout. It appeared he was once again set to catch passes from Drake Maye in 2026.

And then Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins tore his ACL.

The injury once again made Boutte a prime trade candidate, and the Texans made the move, acquiring the field-stretching wideout in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick. Boutte will seemingly fill the role that Higgins left behind, which gives him a chance at becoming the WR2 for an offense, which is an obvious upgrade over his WR3 role in New England.

We’ll see if his deployment changes on a new team, but coming aboard this close to the start of the season makes it difficult and unlikely. Boutte ran go routes a whopping 38.2% of the time with the Patriots last season, easily the highest rate in the NFL. As a result, his 16.7 yards per reception ranked towards the top of the league. If Boutte doesn’t see more intermediate and layup looks with the Texans, he’s unlikely to surpass boom/bust FLEX status, despite the fact that he has less competition for targets. He’s a fine late-round upside target in redraft formats. 

Boutte’s arrival does, however, give a slight bump to Nico Collins, who now has a good, vertical wide receiver opposite him, allowing him to continue to eat on those in-breaking routes.

For the Patriots, meanwhile, Boutte’s departure does open some things up. No player ran more routes for New England last year than Boutte, while running a route on 75% of dropbacks. The Patriots' top three wideouts are now set to be Brown, Doubs and slot man DeMario Douglas, who ran just 38% of the routes this past season. He should be on the field more, but if New England wants someone who can potentially replace more of the things Boutte excelled in, Kyle Williams is a name to watch. We already mentioned that Boutte’s 38.2% go route rate led the league. But right behind him? Williams at 32%. Still, while Douglas and Williams are names to keep in the back of your mind, they’re unlikely to enter fantasy lineups if Brown and Doubs are healthy.

The Patriots only deployed 11 personnel (3WR) 50% of the time last year, which ranked 24th in football. And it’s also worth remembering that Mack Hollins, who ranked third on the team in routes run from 11 personnel a year ago, is still on the team. Brown, Doubs and Hunter Henry should remain the top three targets in this passing attack. And between rookie tight end Eli Raridon’s arrival and Boutte’s departure, we could see an uptick in 12 personnel from the Patriots this season. 

Final verdict? Boutte’s move to Houston gives him a slight bump, while Pop Douglas and Kyle Williams have a better chance of becoming fantasy-relevant.
