QBs At Their Peak Looking For Boom Fantasy Football Seasons: Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson And More

Jorge Martin examines 11 quarterbacks in their peak era age 29 to 33 to determine if this could be their best season yet for fantasy football.

Whenever a young QB breaks out, it feels like found gold. Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson doing it in back to back years in their respective sophomore campaigns was unicorn levels of special. Josh Allen being more conventional and waiting for Year 3 to pop for 4,544 passing yards and 45 total TDs in 2020 won people leagues after he was taken at his mid-round ADP.

What happens more regularly throughout NFL history is that quarterbacks take a while to marinate, and if they do so in a great ecosystem there could be fireworks. Going back in the NFL time machine, Dan Fouts started 43 out of 70 games his first five years in the NFL. By Year 5, at age 28, he was fourth in the league in TD passes at 24, finishing behind three Hall of Famers. In his age-29 season, he became just the second QB in NFL history to pass for more than 4,000 yards.

More recently, Tom Brady, by many considered the GOAT of all QBs, had a 2007 season for the ages with 4,806 passing yards and the first 50-TD season in NFL history. He was 30 that season, which was his seventh as a starter.

Quarterbacks in Peak Age Range for Fantasy Football 2026

A recent article in The Athletic uncovered that the range for quarterbacks to have their best seasons is 29 to 33. It makes sense, because quarterback is the most difficult position in sports, and for every young player like Mahomes or Jackson who busts out early, many have to master so many of the nuances of the position before they have success. And since the league has so little patience—most likely because of front offices and head coaches who are on the hot seat—that we’re seeing several QBs who are reaching success multiple franchise stops after the one that originally drafted them. In a way, it’s similar to baseball players, who can take years of median performance in the big leagues before All-Star seasons come in the late 20s.

That brings us to today’s exercise, where we’ll identify 11 NFL quarterbacks in the 29-to-33 age range, and identifying if they could have a peak season in them still to come. QBs like Matthew Stafford (37), Jordan Love (27), Justin Herbert (28) and Jalen Hurts (28) are not included here because they do not fit into the peak range. We’ll even include a quick prediction as to whether this could be a peak season for them. Before that, if you want to get more in-depth coverage on quarterbacks, Dwain McFarland has put together the quintessential QB Tiers article that covers all the likely starting passers in the league.

BUF_bills-logo.svgJosh Allen | Age 30 | Bills

Can he just continue the status quo that has been happening since 2020? He’s finished as either the QB1 or QB2 every season since his breakout. To have a peak season, he’d have to surpass 2023 when he posted 4,306 passing yards and 29 TDs, adding 15 more scores on the ground (and 524 yards).

Prediction: While there is the wise strategy to wait at QB, in examining his ADP of 34.8 Allen is going in a range with Tee Higgins, Ladd McConkey and Malik Nabers. I wouldn’t blame you for clicking on Allen to assure yourself the QB who just got a WR upgrade in DJ Moore and is playing at the peak of his powers with continuity in playcalling from HC Joe Brady. That o-line has quietly been one of the best in the NFL over recent years.

ARI_cardinals-logo.svg Jacoby Brissett | Age 33 | Cardinals

Turning 34 in December, Jacoby Brissett has been on the bench most of his peak. But last year, he made up for lost time by firing at least 35 pass attempts in 9 of his 12 starts. Trey McBride and Michael Wilson thrived at various points in the season, and Marvin Harrison Jr. is not going away. The question will be if the Cardinals and new HC Mike LaFleur go to rookie Carson Beck to see what he has—and to maybe solidify a high draft pick in the loaded 2027 QB class.

Prediction: Brissett may have already had his peak season last year. In 2026, he mixes in some high-volume games trying to keep up with the opposing offenses, but he gives up the reins to Beck shortly after Thanksgiving.

CIN_bengals-logo.svg Joe Burrow | Age 29 | Bengals

Sandy Koufax once told 19-year-old Clayton Kershaw right after they met, “just stay healthy.” Can the legendary lefty give that directive to Burrow? In his last three healthy seasons—2021, 2022 and 2024—Burrow passed for no fewer than 4,475 yards and 35 TDs. His peak was 4,918 yards and 43 scores two years ago.

Prediction: With elite weapons Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins also in their primes, a 5,000-yard, 45-TD season is well within reach. A closing stretch against the Panthers, Colts and Ravens has some shootout potential in the fantasy playoffs, even with the improving Bengals defense. He’s going in the Round 6 range with four other top passers, though he’s the only one in that group without much rushing upside.

SEA_seahawks-logo.svg Sam Darnold | Age 29 | Seahawks

Can we just say that after consecutive 4,000-yard seasons and 60 combined TD passes that Sam Darnold is good at this quarterbacking thing? He’s one of the poster children of QBs who were mishandled by the franchise that drafted them, then thrived elsewhere. There are concerns for 2026. He’ll have his third playcaller in three seasons as a starter, and both of his top RBs from the Super Bowl-winning team will not be available Week 1—Zach Charbonnet will not return from a torn ACL until well into the season.

Prediction: Darnold still gets to throw it to Jaxon Smith-Njigba at least 10 times a game, so good things will happen often. But coming off a championship season it might be too much to ask for Darnold to reach the numbers of last season. Was his peak in 2024? Maybe, but don’t be surprised when he throws for over 4,000 yards.

DET_lions-logo.svg Jared Goff | Age 31 | Lions

One of the more underrated quarterbacks in fantasy, Jared Goff has been a top-12 QB in two of his last three seasons. The outlier year he was QB14. He still has one of the best skill-position groups in the NFL, led by first-round fantasy picks Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown. The offensive line should be better, and the defense may have some rough games, so we have some shootout potential. That’s especially the case at home.

Prediction: Turning 32 part way into the season, Goff will finish top 12 again, throwing for about 4,500 yards and 30+ TDs. Maybe he won’t put up a peak season, but a median season will still be plenty good. Drew Petzing called up the plays for Brissett’s big finish last year, which is good. Plus, Goff has a sneak-good playoff schedule, with two dome games and a possible Week 17 shootout in icy Chicago.

BAL_ravens-logo.svg Lamar Jackson | Age 29 | Ravens

Predict Jackson’s demise as a dual-threat QB at your own risk. I’m not. Jackson is still the gold standard of dual-threat QBs and hasn’t hit 30. The last time he changed OC (to Todd Monken), he won the NFL MVP in 2023. The next season he had his outlier season with career highs in passing yards (4,172) and TD passes (41). He added 915 yards and 4 TDs. He gets a new OC in Declan Doyle from the Bears and HC Ben Johnson.

Prediction: Don’t anyone say that if Jackson throws for close to 4,000 yards and rushes for 700-800 yards that it is a “down” season. That’s still very much peak Lamar. He needs to show that the injury bug that bit him in 2025 is in the past. It probably is, so a top-3 QB season is on the way.

IND_colts-logo.svg Daniel Jones | Age 29 | Colts

Through a 7-1 start, Daniel Jones threw for 2,062 yards and 13 TDs (3 INTs). He even added 4 scores on the ground. This was easily the best he’s looked in his career. Then came a bit of a slump that preceded a Week 14 torn Achilles. Now come the questions on if he’s going to come back to put up even close to that eight-game stretch from last season. Hmmm, that’s a tall order.

Prediction: That start to last season will be hard to match coming off a serious leg injury for a mobile QB. He could have a tough opening stretchc, especially if Alec Pierce starts off slowly because he’s recovering from injury himself. But with health, there’s plenty of confidence that Jones can have a very good season with a good group of skill-position players and a solid playcaller in Shane Steichen.

KC_chiefs-logo.svg Patrick Mahomes | Age 31 | Chiefs

Yes, he got invited to the royal wedding. That’s only partly because Patrick Mahomes is as responsible for putting Travis Kelce on the map as anyone. This remains the best QB in the NFL, though his offenses didn’t show that all the time the past few seasons. Now comes the return of Eric Bieniemy, who was last the OC in KC in 2022. That year Mahomes passed for league highs in yards (5,250) and TDs (41). Can he do it again in a season he’s coming off a torn ACL in December?

Prediction: Like with Jackson, don’t write off Mahomes so easily. This is a man who has a pair of 5K passing seasons and in those seasons he passed for 50 and 41 TDs, respectively. Going at pick 91.4 and in the range of handcuff RBs Blake Corum and Kyle Monangai, this is a great spot to take Mahomes in drafts.

Prediction: I’ve predicted wrongly two of the three times that he was in the Super Bowl that the Chiefs would lose. And the two times the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl in the Mahomes era, I predicted they’d win those. While Mahomes may not run much, Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice will have more room to run with Kenneth Walker making defenses play honest. Mahomes goes back to 4K yards and 30 TD passes.

TB_buccaneers-logo.svg Baker Mayfield | Age 31 | Buccaneers

Seeing Baker Mayfield run around and then hit a completion for a first down or even a score, it’s fun to project him to have something close to the 4,500-yard, 41-TD season in 2024. But was that his peak? He lost Mike Evans this offseason to the 49ers, though the pass catchers Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin will catch plenty of passes this season.

Prediction: With his fourth OC in four seasons at Tampa Bay, there may be some acclimation time for Mayfield. While he probably won’t reach the heights of 2024, a 4,000-yard and 30-TD season is very possible. Even likely.

MIN_vikings-logo.svg Kyler Murray | Age 29 | Vikings

Kyler Murray has played a full season only once in the past five seasons. His Cardinals stint ended poorly with a five–game run that was followed by Brissett’s carnival ride of a finish. Now comes a start over with Kevin O’Connell, the alleged QB whisperer. While the J.J. McCarthy experience dimmed the brightness of KOC’s acumen with passers, the bet here is that Murray will have a solid-to-great comeback season in 2026. I read an article earlier that quoted a former Cardinals assistant who said that Murray liked to be coached hard. KOC will oblige.

Prediction: In 2020, Murray came close to passing for 4,000 yards. He’ll hit it this season, as he puts on a great salary drive for 2027 and beyond. This drive will cause KOC to want to keep Murray around beyond this season.

DAL_cowboys-logo.svg Dak Prescott | Age 33 | Cowboys

Like with Burrow, when Dak Prescott is healthy, the Dallas QB is good for about 4,500 yards and 30+ TDs. Still, with one of the best WR tandems in the NFL in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, and Brian Schottenheimer dialing up a high-paced attack, Dak will still be plenty great and remain a wonderful pick in fantasy.

Prediction: Dak will fall below Herbert in ADP, mostly because of the hype around the Chargers and Mike McDaniel. We still love the Cowboys offense and their rebuilding defense. With the dynamic duo of pass catchers, chalk him up for 4,500 yards and 30 scores again.
