Ty Simpson Fantasy Football Outlook With Los Angeles Rams: An Elite Dynasty Stash?

Ty Simpson Fantasy Football Outlook With Los Angeles Rams: An Elite Dynasty Stash?

Adam Pfeifer breaks down the fantasy football impact of Round 1's biggest surprise, Ty Simpson going No. 13 overall to the Los Angeles Rams.

There was some buzz that Ty Simpson would be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. But surely, even if it did happen, it would be towards the back end, right?

Right?

The Rams shocked the world, selecting Simpson with the 13th overall pick. While thinking about it can be scary, preparing for life after Matthew Stafford is paramount, and the Rams want to make sure they have their plan for the future.

If the Rams are lucky, Simpson won’t play a single down of football this season. But for the future, there aren’t many better landing spots for a young signal caller.

For starters, Sean McVay is arguably the best offensive mind in all of football. Perhaps no playcaller does a better job of giving his players the answers to the test both pre- and post-snap than McVay, who clearly must have seen a strong marriage between his scheme and Simpson’s skill set. Last year, the Rams targeted the middle of the field on 21% of pass attempts, while no quarterback threw to the intermediate area of the field more than Stafford (140 attempts). That is where Simpson excels, demonstrating tremendous touch and accuracy on in-breaking routes.

Some worry about the lack of experience from Simpson, who only has 15 career starts under his belt. Luckily, he’ll get to learn from a former MVP who has played high-level quarterback for the last 15 years. Simpson will have a bona fide WR1 in Puka Nacua for years to come, while we’ve seen the Rams try to add more help at wide receiver for when Davante Adams’ time in Los Angeles is up.

Should You Plan To Draft Ty Simpson In Dynasty Leagues?

This is obviously only really fantasy-relevant for dynasty purposes, but it is a very interesting development. Simpson going in Round 1 would have made noise, but 13th overall will vault Simpson into the first round of rookie drafts. Matthew Freedman agrees, as he's bumped Simpson up half a round in rookie superflex drafts.

We’ve seen with many quarterbacks over the years that coaching and supporting cast really make a difference, and Simpson, whenever he is ready to play, will be in one of the best environments in all of football.

The lack of rushing upside will limit his overall fantasy ceiling, but this was just about the best-case scenario for Simpson’s future fantasy football outlook.

Scouting Report For Ty Simpson

An older prospect with limited experience isn’t exactly a recipe for the most appealing quarterback prospect, but Simpson pairs great footwork with strong accuracy. And his completion numbers would have looked even better if it weren’t for plenty of drops at Alabama last year. As an athlete, Simpson is solid, not spectacular, but has shown some strong sack avoidance during his minimal playing time.
