4 Backfields To Watch For Zero-RB Fantasy Football Drafters

If you spend time in the deepest, darkest corners of the fantasy football underworld this offseason, you’ve most definitely stumbled upon a conversation that starts with something like this …

Is Zero RB Dead In 2026?

It’s a valid line of inquiry.

There are three factors contributing to the potential death of Zero RB:

1) A historically weak rookie RB class (no new influx of talent)
2) Early-round RBs are more expensive than ever (15 RBs go in Top 30 picks)
3) A new premium placed on upside RB profiles (TreVeyon Henderson in Round 4?!)

Of course, I think a lot of this Zero RB hand-wringing is more about the ambiguity this time of year than an actual sea change for the strategy.

The trickiest thing about executing Zero RB right now is simply the uncertainty. There are a lot of questions in the later rounds, specifically surrounding the rookies and handcuffs. The big question with any RB going after pick 150 is simple …

Are they the RB2 … or…gulp … could they actually be the RB3?

RB2s are incredibly valuable assets in fantasy (there’s both contingent upside and a path to standalone value), but an RB3 is likely a total zero.

It is important to keep a close eye on these situations so we can pounce when their outlook becomes more clear.

Here are four backfields I’m closely watching because they have the potential to unlock Zero-RB builds as the summer progresses:

  • Colts RB2: Whoever gets the nod behind Jonathan Taylor will be a very valuable handcuff, but it sounds like a true toss-up between DJ Giddens and rookie Seth McGowan right now. Stay patient.
  • Niners RB2: Like JT, CMC’s backup is a legit commodity. We just don’t know who it is yet. Sounds like Jordan James is in the pole position, but rookie Kaelon Black is lurking. Stay patient here, but be ready to move.
  • Packers RB2: Everyone has been snake-bitten by MarShawn Lloyd, but he’s beefed up his offseason training regimen and has stayed healthy in camp. If we get a definitive nod that he’s ahead of Chris Brooks, he’s a premium Zero-RB target.
  • Cowboys RB2: Speaking of snake-bitten, we all touched the Jaydon Blue hot stove last year and got burned … but what are we scared of? Malik Davis? Phil Mafah? The reports sound bullish on Blue and I think I’m willing to take the leap of faith now considering he’s completely free.

Robust RB Strategy: Draft Them All Early

There’s the Zero-RB draft strategy, which as mentioned above is for those brave souls who thrive in knowing that their RB room on draft day will look far different late in the season. Then there are the Hero-RB drafters, who want that security of the 300-touch blanket that will complement a WR room that is the envy of most of the laegue.

For those who want high T, we present the Robust RB strategy. Come draft day, you hit the running backs early, then again and even sometimes again. There’s advantages to gain, if all those picks hit. Teams can soar with multiple backs who are having top-10 seasons. That’s why Adam Pfeifer is continuing his series on draft strategies with this aggressive approach.

Embrace The Uncomfortable in Guillotine LeaguesTM

That game you’ve come to love called fantasy football, pretty cool, huh? What if we told you there was a way to play it that makes the search for a Monday Night miracle look like a leisurely weekend stroll. If you haven’t played Guillotine Leagues, the sweat of being on the chopping block every week gives you that playoff feel … all 17 weeks! Kendall Valenzuela did a good job of describing the feel of evading the blade, for those brave enough to want to play a game with the ultimate edge:

This is a different way of drafting and a unique way of navigating the waiver wire, so my best piece of advice is to embrace the uncomfortable, because if you try and play this like other fantasy leagues you're in, then you are bound to be chopped. Just remember: in Guillotine Leagues™, you're not trying to finish first, but instead, you're trying not to finish last in any week.
