Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints Fantasy Football Matchup Breakdown For Week 1

We know Dan Campbell’s foot will be smashed up against the accelerator again this season, and why wouldn’t it? Easily a top-tier offensive unit before even getting off the bus, the Lions ranked top-5 across the board in all the macro stats that matter — including points per game (28.3), yards/play (6.0) and points/drive (2.5). Oh, and they’ve got some guy named Jahmyr Gibbs shouldering the load who’s supposedly pretty good.

Now mix in a consensus top-10 offensive line with the fast track at Ford Field and depleted safety depth in the Lions’ secondary (Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph on the PUP list). Put ‘em together and what do you got? Besides the obvious Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, it’s a perfect recipe to contend for the highest-scoring offense in recent memory. If you drafted any Lions in the top-100 overall, start them without hesitation.

Of course, no Detroit handicap’s complete with doing a pressure check on the other side of the ball. Without exaggeration, no QB’s been more affected by working off-platform under pressure than Jared Goff — the splits are crazy. 

In 2025, he plummeted from being an elite 121.7 PSR, +0.41 EPA/dropback, 6.4 TD/INT player to a below-average 75.8 PSR, -0.24 EPA/dropback, 0.7 TD/INT quarterback under pressure. Obviously, QB play deteriorates in the face of defenders, but it’s always felt especially exacerbated with Goff under center. No more small hands jokes, please, I beg you.

Nevertheless, none of that should be a problem against these Saints, who couldn’t create pressure with one of those industrial-strength hydraulic smashers my kids watch on YouTube. New Orleans finished the season with a sub-35% pressure rate in 2025, as well as bottom-6 grades in both hurries (10.5) and hits per game (7.4). With plenty of time to operate, it’s wheels up for all of Detroit’s weaponry, and with a 28-point projected team total posted at sportsbooks nationwide, everyone can get home in this one.

New Orleans Saints Fantasy Preview

It does take two to tango in order to achieve a massive 50-point total, and I’m fully on board with Kellen Moore’s offense rising to the challenge. In the face of disbelief and mountains of doubt, rookie QB Tyler Shough jumped on board a moving train to wind up as fantasy’s QB8 in terms of points/game after their Week 11 bye. Say what?

Also worth noting, aside from the NFL’s fourth-highest completion rate (69.7%) in that same timeframe, Shough ranked top-four in QB rushing yards (175) and rushing TDs (3). We all know the importance of quarterback rushing in fantasy, and Shough just may be that guy. Granted, there is a splash of cold water here. Our projections place him as this weekend’s QB19, though I’d point out that’s a mere 1.5 fantasy points from our QB11 and a backend QB1 finish.

A rash of preseason skill-position injuries to rookie WR Jordyn Tyson, along with seemingly the entire Saints’ backfield, immediately vault Travis Etienne and Chris Olave into early superstar territory — managers should get while the getting is good. Admittedly high on the Saints this year almost universally, I’m saving some extra focus this weekend for ancillary weapons Juwan Johnson and even Devaughn Vele.

Johnson’s ADP never made sense to me coming off a 102-target season, with a firm grasp on a full complement of routes in a fast-paced offensive scheme. As far as Vele goes, I don’t want to exaggerate my expectations — but even an exact repeat of Vele’s production with Shough under center before getting hurt would make him one of the most mispriced WRs in fantasy. 

Between Weeks 12-15 after the Rashid Shaheed trade, Vele served as New Orleans’ clear second option in a full-time role, with impressive advanced metrics that no one seems to care about (20.5% target/route, 1.88 yards/route). Slap those same numbers on any other player with an uncontested job, and they’d have gotten drafted +50 picks earlier. Definitely worth a watch list click in standard leagues with an outside chance to headline all of next week’s waiver articles.
