Jauan Jennings Signs With Minnesota Vikings: Fantasy Football Impact on Justin Jefferson
Adam Pfeifer breaks down Jauan Jennings signing with the Minnesota Vikings, providing fantasy football impact on Justin Jefferson, Kyler Murray and more.
One of the many veteran free agent wide receivers available has finally found a new home.
After waiting for a potential lucrative deal, Jauan Jennings has agreed to a one-year, $13M deal with the Minnesota Vikings. With Jalen Nailor finding huge money of his own from the Raiders this offseason, Jennings fills the void of WR3 for Minnesota.
Jauan Jennings Fantasy Football Impact With Minnesota Vikings
Jennings enjoyed a mini fourth-year breakout in 2024 with the 49ers, hauling in 77-of-113 targets for 975 yards and 6 touchdowns. And while his numbers dipped this past season, Jennings still managed to find the end zone 9 more times. Over the past two seasons, Jennings has ranked 32nd and 16th in fantasy points per route, largely due to a 35% end-zone target share. He’s played 15 games in both seasons, while running a route on nearly 82% of dropbacks.
The Vikings are getting a tough, reliable player to complement Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Since 2024, Jennings’ 69 receptions on third down are the 10th most in the NFL, drawing a target on over 26% of third-down routes and accounting for 24.5% of San Francisco’s third-down targets. It’s a great move for Kyler Murray and the Minnesota offense, giving them a player who can consistently move the chains and sustain drives.
Fantasy Outlook For Vikings Pass Catchers
Justin Jefferson will remain solidified as a top-6 fantasy wideout. Nothing to see here.
But what about the rest of this passing attack?
Let’s start with Jennings, who should be on the field plenty. Last season, the Vikings deployed 11 personnel a healthy 64% of the time, good for the ninth-highest rate in football. And former Viking Jalen Nailor ran a route on 72% of dropbacks, though his 11% target share left plenty to be desired. Other than overall volume, the other question is how Jennings will mesh with Murray. During his time in San Francisco, Jennings did a lot of damage off in-breaking routes. Last year, 27% of his routes were in-breaking or crossers. But since 2024, Murray has attempted such routes on only 15% of his passes. Jennings will have some strong weeks led by touchdowns, especially if the Vikings lead the league in dropback rate from inside the 10-yard line again (68%). But unless the overall pass volume climbs, he’s unlikely to settle in as anything more than a WR4 in fantasy.
This move could slightly impact Jordan Addison, and heavily affect T.J. Hockenson, who ranked outside the top-20 tight ends in target share a season ago (16%). Hockenson also failed to eclipse 6 targets in a game all year long, so the Vikings adding someone who can command more targets than their former WR3 isn’t exactly good news for his fantasy prospects. Already a player I was avoiding in drafts, the arrival of Jennings will only make Hockenson even less appealing.
Addison, meanwhile, remains an upside WR3. He finished last year with a target share south of 20%, but often makes up for it with explosive plays. Addison sported a 14.5 aDOT last year, while accounting for 34% of Minnesota’s air yards. He also ranked ninth in football in receiving yards off go routes (139). Expect him to continue to see 5-7 targets per game, with potentially more frequent spike weeks with (hopefully) stable quarterback play.
