QB Rankings Downgrades For Week 3 Fantasy Football: Matthew Stafford Leads Freedman's Fades
Matthew Freedman runs through the QBs that are getting downgraded in his Week 3 fantasy football rankings.
Let's get into the Week 3 QB edition of Freedman's Fades, where I highlight guys I'm downgrading because of …
- Unfavorable betting factors and situational spots
- Disadvantageous defensive matchups (perhaps amplified by offensive injury)
- Decreased usage expectations (again, maybe exacerbated by offensive injury)

Matchup Downgrades In My Week 3 QB Rankings: Matthew Stafford at Broncos & Baker Mayfield vs. Vikings
There are a few "reverse flow chart" defenses so good that they serve automatic downgrades to whatever QBs they face. If a guy is playing one of them, I aggressively move him down my ranks. If not, I carry on.
Based on the numbers I see in our Fantasy Football DvP (Defense vs. Position) Matrix as well as RBs Don't Matter and FTN, the Broncos and Vikings last year were two of the biggest reverse flow chart defenses for QBs.
- Broncos: No. 1 in defensive dropback SR (38.9%)
- Vikings: No. 1 in smallest fantasy boost allowed to QBs (-5.4)
Here be dragons.
Matthew Stafford (Rams) at Broncos: Before the season started, one of my 2026 NFL best bets was that Stafford would win MVP (+1400). After he just passed for 327 yards and four TDs (to one INT) in a 28-6 win on Monday Night Football, that bet doesn't look bad. Still, I'm exercising restraint for Week 3. The Rams have traveled almost 17,000 miles so far this season (a league-worst mark), they're on a one-day rest deficit, and the Broncos are playing their second straight game at home, where they have a fully maximized advantage against the Rams, who are outside of conference, on grass (vs. turf), and outdoors (vs. indoors). On top of that, Stafford could once again be without starting WRs Puka Nacua (hip) and Jordan Whittington (quadriceps).
Baker Mayfield (Bucs) vs. Vikings: It wasn't long ago, but Mayfield's career-best 4,500-yard, 41-TD 2024 campaign feels far removed. Through two games, he has looked almost like the worst version of himself (No. 24 fantasy QB, with 12.4 points per game and 398 yards, one TD passing, one INT, 6.0 AY/A for the season). Given the matchup, I don't expect him to show marked improvement this week. Plus, HC Todd Bowles has historically been his worst in Week 3 (1-7 ATS, -75.8% ROI, per Action Network).
Week 3 QB Rankings Scoring Downgrades: Drake Maye at Jaguars & Daniel Jones vs. Texans
Sometimes downgrades are as simple as: "This team isn't going to score many points, so I need to push down the QB."
Entering the season, I had the Patriots projected with the No. 7 offense; the Colts, No. 17. But this week the Pats are No. 20 in implied team total (21 points), and the Colts are No. 22 (20.5).
Downgrades warranted.
Drake Maye (Patriots) at Jaguars: In 2026, Maye has not looked like the 2025 MVP runner-up (386 yards, one TD passing to four INTs, 4.1 AY/A). The Pats haven't scored more than 20 points in either game, and now they're on the road against the Jags, who last year had the No. 1 home-field advantage (+17.4, per NFElo). On top of that, the Pats are granting an additional edge to the Jags because they're outside of division and on grass (vs. turf). Without No. 1 WR A.J. Brown (ankle, IR) and RG Michael Onwenu (ankle), Maye seems likely to see his season-opening slump extend into Week 3.
Daniel Jones (Colts) vs. Texans: The thrill is gone. Through two games, Jones has done almost nothing with his legs (4-14-0 rushing, perhaps because of last year's season-ending Achilles injury), and his passing efficiency (5.3 AY/A) has regressed from his career-best peak of 2025 (8.1) to his modest mark of 2023-24 (5.2). What we've seen from Jones this year (376 yards, two TDs passing to two INTs): This is who Jones really is. It's theoretically good for Jones that he's home and indoors … but the Texans have cut that advantage down to almost nothing because they're in the division, and they play on a similar turf surface in a similar domed stadium. And it gets worse: No. 1 WR Alec Pierce (heel) exited Week 2 with an aggravated injury, and the Texans last year were No. 1 in defensive dropback EPA (-0.126).
Situational Downgrades In The Week 3 QB Fantasy Rankings: Bryce Young at Browns & Michael Penix at Packers
In general, I want to avoid QBs playing in poor weather conditions, in stadiums with diminished advantages, or in notable subpar situational spots.
Here are two such QBs who stand out.
Bryce Young (Panthers) at Browns: Young through two weeks has been the No. 2 QB (28.3 fantasy points per game, 648 yards, six TDs passing to one INT, 9.9 AY/A). Unreal … and I mean that literally. This is almost certainly not real. To his credit, Young has improved each year of his career, but last season he was still a subpar passer (6.2 AY/A), and the teams he played in Weeks 1-2 (Bears, Falcons) I expect to have some of the league's worst defenses by the end of the season. To be clear: I'm not saying the Browns defense is elite, but at least it has EDGE Jared Verse, DT Mason Graham, LB Carson Schwesinger, and CB Denzel Ward. Plus, the Browns have an amplified home-field advantage against the Panthers, who are out of conference and on grass (vs. turf). As productive as he has been, I'd still be skeptical about starting Young in Guillotine Leagues™.
Michael Penix (Falcons) at Packers: Penix (knee) is yet to return to action following last year's season-ending injury, but I think he has a real chance to play on Thursday because he has practiced fully each of the past two weeks. But the Falcons have a number of edges going against them in this spot: Unlike the Packers (who have six primetime games this year), the Falcons are significantly outside their primary play window (they have 13 games at 1 pm ET). Additionally, HC Kevin Stefanski is terrible on the road (19-33 ATS, -29.5% ROI). Finally, the Packers have an intensified home-field advantage against the Falcons, who are outside the division, on grass (vs. turf), and outdoors (vs. indoors).
Week 3 Offensive Injury Downgrades In My QB Ranks: Jalen Hurts at Bears & C.J. Stroud at Colts
Here are a couple of QBs who get downgrades because of injuries to supporting offensive players.
Jalen Hurts (Eagles) at Bears: Hurts has a good setup against the Bears, who might be without CB Tyrique Stevenson (hamstring) and are definitely without CB Kyler Gordon (calf, PUP) and SS Coby Bryant (knee, IR). But the Bears are on their second straight home game, the Eagles are on their second straight road game, and there's a real chance that RB Saquon Barkley (shoulder) and TE Dallas Goedert (knee) will be out alongside LG Landon Dickerson (knee, IR). The Eagles are 2-0 … but they're also fool's gold at 0-2 ATS. Such underperformers have historically fared poorly in Week 3 (3-8 ATS, -45.6% ROI).
C.J. Stroud (Texans) at Colts: Stroud's overall numbers look good enough (627 yards, two TDs passing, no INTs), but his underlying stats are modest (60.2% completion rate, 7.2 AY/A), and I'm skeptical No. 1 WR Nico Collins (hamstring) and RG Ed Ingram (groin) will suit up. And with WRs Tank Dell (knee, IR) and Jayden Higgins (knee, IR) definitely out, Stroud will have almost no one to throw to. I mean, I love TE Dalton Schultz as much as the next man, but … that's just another way of saying I don't love him all that much.
